1865 track day and DD

Well since I finaly realized that my intro thread was turning into a build thread I figured I would do things the proper way.
1991 vr4 1865/2000 non sunroof
My plans are 400 ish hp, relocate the radiator forward 2-3 inches to accommodate room for a bigger turbo. Also have plans to upgrade bushing, suspension, coilovers exc. I'm swapping everything from my 93 talon to keep this peice of history alive.
Now onto the pics. Feel free to ask questions as I may fail to explain everything in the pics.

Kind of a standard modification if you own a vr4. A jdm bumper.

Time for cutting. FYI the front was damaged and needed to be removed anyways. If it wasn't damaged I Probably would have left the front core support alone.

Removed the front support after bending and welding in a new replacment.

Pulled the front subframe today. Getting ready to install poly bushings. While removing the frame one of the mounting bolts snapped off in the body:(. So looks like I will be ether drilling and re theading or cutting the head off of a bolt sticking it in the hole. (there's about 1.5-2.0" deep recess Before the threads start) and welding studs in.

It's also bent at the trailing arms mounting point. Minor setback since I can just use the talons subframe when the time comes to dismantle it.

Ready to install the Walbro 255 and found this shit!

The hanger is to rusted to use so I broke the fitting to hopfully save the hose. I then bead blasted the fitting and soaked it in PB blaster.
Looks like the hose will be ok.
Since the FP is toast I figured I would modify a 1g dsm hanger.

I had to cut and weld the hanger from the 1g to make it fit properly. Took 1 1/4" to match the stock hanger.

Re: 1865 track day and DD

Because he pulled those coilovers out of a DSM. The bolt pattern for the top plate is different and they will only fit if turned 90 degrees. I had to use new Tein e39a plates on my JIC coilovers since they came off a DSM as well. Otherwise mine would have looked the same way.

Exactly what Turbowop said. I'm shooting for 2-2.5 degs of negative camber but also 4-4.5 degs of caster. So far I very roughly have -1.8 camber and close to 4 of caster.

update time
Had an injector O ring leaking pretty bad when cranking the engine over. Replaced all the injector seals.
Found that the fuel supply line going to the fuel filter was bottoming out on the threads causing a major leak. Took one thread off the end. tested again with no leaks.
also found i wasn't getting power to half of the MPI relay. tested power going in and out. found the BR wire coming from the fuseable link #8 had no power. traced and found a bad fuse at the engine fuse panel.
Now that all the issues (for now) are fixed i am able to connect to Dsmlink. the car starts and runs great!!
I just need to make a bracket for the coolant overflow tank, wire the cooling fan relay and weld the 3" exhaust up.
more pics will come.

If I can save you some grief, please install your oil pressure sender on the end of a flexible an line or just return your electric oil pressure sender from Autometer. I've had two sending units die out. The first one they covered under warranty but the second was past warranty and they are not cheap at $70+ for a replacement. They only last about a year in the OFH. I was told doing research that they need to be "isolated."

Re: 1865 track day and DD

Is it just the angle of the photo or are your sidewalls bowed in slightly because of the wider width of those tires to fit on those wheels? Would you recommend getting those 235s or go smaller to a 225? I think 245s are out of the question for those tires on an Evo 8 wheel.

It seems like the 225s only come in a 45 series sidewall.

Wheels look great Evan! I was always a big fan of the Evo 8 wheels on the GVR4. I gotta agree with Wop though, a set of gold wheels would really compliment that dark green. I know shitting out money for whatever wheels you want is something we all wish for, but gold RPF1s on that thing or bust!

I've had gold wheels on most of my old cars and wanted to change it up a bit. I had gold rota grids on my white 89 civic SI HB, gold wheels on my Levin converted AE86. As far as the tire. The sidewall does slightly come in but not that bad. I wouldn't put 245's on as that is overkill. The 225 45 will roughly be the same thickness as a 235/40 so it wouldn't be to bad.

Looks really good, Evan!

I will likely 235s since the 225s are only 4 dollars cheaper per tire if you don't mind me totally copying your setup. Might as well pick up that extra footprint for the minimal extra cost. That really is a super deal, the best I've seen in a long time. My car is hardly driven so it wouldn't see much tire wear over time.

Your car would look great with black hood, trunk, roof perhaps? The rest that green. You almost already have that theme going, ever considered it?

Yeah I may tack a small brace from flange to flange but I thought the expansion difference may make more stress on the tubing and promote cracking. But I may also run a brace from the WG to the manifold for vibration so it's still in the works.

It's an 8 blade HX35 with the BEP bolt on housing. The engine is a 6 bolt with 2g dsm pistons. Running ARP mains, rods and head studs. Stock cams for now but that will eventually change. EVO 8 exhaust valves, springs and retainers.

Re: 1865 track day and DD

Not to be a Debbie Downer but that's not a good spot for a BOV. Besides the signal line having to be so long and inducing a delay in the pressure release making that massive amount of air have to change direction and travel all the way back from the throttle plate plus through the restrictive core again seems counter intuitive. Nevermind the possible line or BOV damage from road debris (maybe it will be hidden behind the bumper?). And don't forget that when cruising around the BOV will be open so you could get some sand in your vag, errrrr intercooler, so be sure to put a filter on that thang. The end tanks do make me pitch a little tent though.

EHmotorsports
(Capt Fabbin Stabbin)
03/07/15 06:22 PM
Re: 1865 track day and DD

contrary to what you are saying having the BOV closer to the turbo is beneficial as it is venting hot pressure vs already cooled pressure. pressure will still vent off as the turbo is the source of the pressure not the throttle plate. I have chatted with several Aussies that build drag RX3's and have come to the conclusion that having the BOV pre cooler is more beneficial.
also having an extra 2 feet of signal line is hardly enough to cause a severe delay in response but i have plans on hard piping 3/4 of the line along the fender well to the firewall due to myself having the same concern.but the main reason for doing this is to clean up the engine bay. And thank you for voicing your concerns and compliment I truly do Appreciate it all:)

Please don't take my comment as negative in any way just tossing ideas around.

I still think the focus should be on the mass of air and not the pressure which is just a byproduct of that mass of air. Kind of how people are so concerned with how much boost pressure you are running when it's mass airflow that matters. EFR turbo's do have the BOV right on the turbo housing and BW engineers are a lot smarter than me so there's that. Keep us updated if it works well so we can all copy you.

I am 5'9" and can see perfectly fine. the seat is still angled so the shorter you are the higher the seat will get when you adjust it forward. but i still have at least 1-1.5" extra room for a helmet compared to other brackets.

It's too bad you don't take any pride in your work, maybe someday you can stop being so sloppy.

I know Andrew. I hope some day I will care enough about this shitbox to do something fun with it.

All this work and doesn't have a proper hood prop....

Just a red pipe

I have the hood strut kit but tightening down one of the pivot balls it snapped. so its on the list to find non china pivots and drill/extract the little shit out of the body.

hahaha honestly it would be less of a headache for me and cheaper for you to just have Jacks transmissions to do it. lol. I only did it because I wanted to see how it was done. $10.00 bearings and shims and my time was worth the learning experience.

It's been a while since I have updated this build. HX35 is installed and i just finished making the catch can. Wiring and a proper air box will be the next goal.

Looks great, Evan. That catch can is legit.

Which size BEP housing are you running?

The way the fitting on the valve cover for the vent was grafted on there looks real nice. I was wondering how this car was doing.

It's just the basic housing for the HX35. Nothing special but in the long run I will ether upgrade the turbo to something a lot nicer or I will use the 12cm twin scroll housing and make a proper manifold.

Thanks guys! If I had to do it all over again I might change things slightly. But I am happy with how it is for now:) the build never ends haha.
