181/1000 the half-a$$ rally car

well I picked up number 181 as an alternative to running my jeep everywhere. I figured the gas savings alone would be beneficial. well like 4 days later it jumped time. well thats when the money pit started. once the head was pulled the valves were all smashed, and the pistons were nicked up. so the motor got pulled and I picked a 1g donor. the donor motor got stripped down, and completely rebuilt.
all new gaskets, BSE kit, new composite hg, arps, new valve cover, cyclone intake with a phenolic spacer, ported 2g exhaust manifold.

well when we went as pulled the motor, I decided to pull it all together. when the axles needed to come out I couldnt get them out of the knuckles without pulling the ball-joint. then I decided to replace the control arms since there was rust on the arms, and new arms come with ball joints. well when the old arms came out, the mounts were all rusted so thats when I decided that 181 would become a little more hardcore. no point in keeping a vr4 nice that has been rust repaired. so once I decided it would be a half-a$$ rally car we deleted the AC, cruise, PS, and ABS. the entire front sub-frame got replaced with new, new control arms, new brakes and suspension, prothane motor mounts.

then I went ahead and replaced the trans with a shorter throw 90' trans, act flywheel, new stage something PP and full face clutch, SS clutch line, with new cylinder, and new oem axles, and tcase.

with everything else the front went 5lug. with new bearings and the steering rack switched out.

after I got it.

begin the tear down.

begin of rust repair, and can see the partial damage.

front view. I think that it should be dropped some. it was already dropped one inch, but it looks higher than stock with all the weight I have pulled out.

there are a lot more mods under the hood, but I havent been too worried with pictures. I have a mishimoto rad, a braille battery, hood latch delete, all non-abs lines with galant abd proportioning valve.

Re: 181/1000 the half-a$$ rally car

yea, there are hundreds of little mods like that. external oil cooler, huge FMIC, blacked corners, and turn signals. everything unnecessary removed and deleted. just waterpump, oilpump, and alternator are teh only things left.

it also has the jmf heat shield ceramic coated, along with the o2 and intake and exhaust mani being coated as well. for temporary I have a 2g,560s and a keydiver. but I need to get a new chip for the cyclone, my evo8 mafs, and bigger injectors. I have a an in cabin mbc, aem uego, and boost gauge, along with a palm for data logging.

things that are getting done before the weekend, is the wiring harness being stripped, radio delete, ac core delete, and probably have the interior slimmed down. hopefully getting my piping done, and the front end reassembled.

I was told that the 1990 trans were weaker internally. Can't recall but I think it has to do with less renforcement webbing or something or the other.

Has anybody else heard that?

Re: 181/1000 the half-a$$ rally car

its a moot point as far as my build is concerned. it provides a smooth short shift, without changing my shifter height. as far as power, Im positive it will hold a 16g just fine, especially during the winter, when my weakest link is traction. by the time the trans could be an issue, it will get a built trans that will handle bigger numbers. right now its in winter beater mode.

well I have gotten some more work done, but its all been done late at night, so the pics are too dark, but I moved the fuse box to the firewall, along with mounting my braille to the firewall as well. made some new wire ends and grounds. and started on the intercooler and piping. the wiring was moved on the inside of the 'frame' rails, the the headlight supports were 'modified' and the radiator mounts moved to allow the intercooler piping to run on each side of the rad.

most of the sound deadening has been pulled from the trunk, and the seats have been pulled, and are going in #1630. Ill try and get some of the crappy pics loaded.

Re: 181/1000 the half-a$$ rally car

well we went pretty much idle there for a couple weeks, partly due to the holidays, partly due to me giving my jeep some attention, and mostly due to the fact that I lost the stinking keys for it! I got a brand new one made at the dealer for $10. it is SOOOO much nicer then my last one. it doesnt snag or catch, and is of very good quality.

After having the engine bay all back apart, rerouting the harness, doing the intercooler piping, and converting a lot of little things, 181 still started right up. I just hooked up the battery, stuck the key in, and turned it right over. started first try.

she is still sitting at the shop as there are a few things I need to be streetable. Need to get an intake the doesnt interfere with new piping layout, bleed the brakes and clutch, and get the exhaust together, and shell be good to go.

Got to get it up and ready so I can make some sweet snow vids.

Re: 181/1000 the half-a$$ rally car

so it literally sat for a year....after starting it up, and driving it around a little bit it had a steering issue, so it sat for a while before I could look at it...a helper put the wrong bolt back in the collar on the steering column. fixed that and then it refused to start. well it had fuel, spark, compression but would not run. do to me starting to race the jeep it just got put on the back burner...well I finally got a space cleaned out in the garage, got it moved from where it was in storage, pulled in the garage, and running within 15 minutes. I think it actually sat for a year, purely because of a bad battery. I tightened up some grounds, check the pump, put a "shop battery" in it and she sputtered to life. fixed the vacuum leaks (just hoses that were pulled during diagnosis) and she runs solid again.

took a startup vid, will get some new pics put up later. The project is finally up and going again. while its in the garage I have got to finish the intake and exhaust, and finish the headlight wiring harness, from my partial tuck/me deleting everything. throw on a slim fan and she will be daily-able. then after that I have to finish my evo ecu harness, get my gauges and such working to make it safe to turn the boost up. then its time for pump. then afpr, prolly some HUGE injectors, and then the biggest bolt on turbo I can find. Most likely just a 'sleeper' 20g. I need to keep my piping, and the stock appearance.

Ill also be starting stage 2 of weight loss, and rust repair. with all that said and done (honestly IMO isnt very much) Ill need to find a CF trunk so I can get the car painted before the shootout. I should also have the N2O hooked up before then as well. my only other plan after that will be to put together a spare/second motor with evo internals. Which will only be if I find the limit of 6bolt rods vs a td05+n2o, but that is just for the hopeful future...It would be nice to have the car 1005 complete before the shootout...which as long as I can find the $$$ and a trunk I should be golden.

more pics to come. (cant find usb cord)

Evo rods are 7 bolt which wouldn't be compatible, not to mention they are weaker than 1g rods. what would you plan on using for your Evo internal build?

i think you'll find the limits of the piston ring lands before you find the limits of the rods

Re: 181/1000 the half-a$$ rally car

well Im not positive what route im going yet, but Im thinking of running a 99 block, with a full evo 9 rotating assembly, along with cams, and valves. around here we do "road rally" and point-point racing. so the gain from compression and lightweight internals will be much more useful than a slightly stronger rod. the plan is to max out a TDO5 then have a N2O system to push it to the limit of the internals, whenever I need that little extra oomph. like when I run into the unsuspecting gtr, or the like.

I think that is far inside the capabilities of the evo rod, while still giving me a lighter faster revving setup that will be happier when I get closer to 8k rpm. plus I like using OEM components. they seem to have the longest life, plus I can get the parts super cheap. since I do all my own work, Id rather push 500hp out of a 450hp system that cost $100 to replace, than to push 600 hp out of a $5000 motor. one major thing to remember is Im limited to the td05 housing, and this is NOT a drag car, so peak power isnt the goal.

Ive also considered doing a 2.4L as well, but dont know if the TQ will be better, or the revs and RPM of a lighter 2.0l

started refreshing my carbon hood. got to wait until monday to get supplies, but ill get it done, then as soon as I find a CF trunk Ill be repainting the roof. there was clear coat peel on the roof/hood/trunk. so after the cf hood and trunk ill just color match the roof and I should be good to go. I would LOVE to do a carbon roof, but in reality its not going to happen to 181. (1630 might get something special though) It would be nice to get a carbon sunroof replacement though.

tomorrow I plan on fixing some more rust, and possibly making an intake pipe. it will most likely be temporary but i need to get my BOV recirc. I might go ahead and do a temp fix on the clear coat as well. but after thats done Ill be back at work finishing up my evo8 ecu adapter. need to remember where my evo MAF wiring has hidden itself.

knocked those little things out, and she is running like a beast again. still not fast, as I have to do a tune after I up my fuel system, but def way faster than stock. partly due to upgrades, and part due to the weight ive stripped.

right now, I need an intake, and an exhaust, and she will be street-able again.

2 tone it at the body line. Just run a tape line from the corner light back to the taillights and call it done. Or you could commit and do the whole car.

Took her out for a spin and wasn't getting heat. I was pretty sure I left the heater core intact, but it was possible the hoses were just looped. Well pulled into the garage and it was about half empty. I remembered having a slow leak around the t-stat, so I filled it up, and it instantly poured all over the ground. Found a blown rear freeze plug :-(.

Ran and got a new plug, and that fixed the leak. Waiting on the permetex on my Tatar to dry and I'll take her out again tonight.
