#431: New GVR4 record holder - info & vids

Youtube Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zpb71tf7_4

We knocked off a clean pass at Etown on this last sunday, Nov 20th. We changed to a larger intercooler core, changed the rear suspension to the D2's (from KYB AGX & soft GC coil over sleeves), and set the alignment to zero at the car's maximum launch attitude. Boost was set back to 40psi and the plug gap was put to .014. Now the air temps are more reasonable at just over 100*F at the traps, which accounted for about 2mph gain at the same boost level compared to the 144mph run that had max AIT of 156*F. The rear suspension was worth some stability on the launch too, as it now leaves straight and doesn't crush the back end down. With the AGX/GC suspension it would slam the rear end down, cause the camber to go way negative, and seemed to bounce back up and upset the car. Now it just hooks and goes straight with no drama!

Unfortunately, we broke something in the trans (stock automatic), I think likely the front diff or the center transfer gear on the next pass. After the 9.3 we hung around a while expecting the tech guy to come throw us out, thankfully he didn't show. So we did the pre-run retune and got it ready to try and improve on the 9.36. I added a few psi of boost, one degree of timing, and turned the shifts up 200rpm. Nelson launched it at 12psi on the 9.3 and got a 1.37, so we decided to shoot for a 14-15psi release and hope for a 5.xxx 1/8mile and maybe a [email protected] Unfortunately, it broke right off the line.

So next year our plans are to put in all the required safety equipment to legally run in the 9's and 150+mph. (cage, chute, window net). both of us are going to get an NHRA license as well as updated helmet and fire suits. Plan to remove about 200-250lb from the car while still keeping it street-looking (much of the weight being light brakes, light wheels, removing the ABS, radio, AC parts...stuff like that). I really believe this car can run in the 8.9's @ 150+ if we can get it to hold together on a 1.2 second 60' time.

Figured I would start a new thread for the video rather than tacking it onto the end of the last thread where people might miss it.

To bad the stock auto could not cut it, are you going to switch to the 2g auto like all the 1g guys running mid 8s at 160+mph? So it looks like your 10mph slower in the 1/8th and 1/4 MPH and .300 quicker at the 1/8th but only .100 quicker in the 1/4? What are your tranny fluid temps? Something is hurting you big time in the last 1/8th vs what you are gaining being auto in the first 1/8th mile. Good luck over the winter, if you want help with safety over the winter just shoot me an PM or Email and I can go over what I did.

Next year we are going to start logging exhaust back pressure and trans temp, but I can't say what's up with either of those now. We have no plans to move to the 2g trans since replacements are hard to find in the junkyard and they seems to go for 3X the price. We can just keep swapping stock 1g trannies that are nearly free. We buy whole 1g auto parts cars, keep the drivetrain, and can often sell off the remainder of the car for a profit still. I think the main reason most guys were swapping to the 2g trans was the availability of the smaller diameter billet converters. Noone makes that for 1g style non-lockup anymore.

As far as the 1/8mile vs 1/4mile, I don't think it's so much a "problem" as it is just a natural advantage of a clutch car vs converter car. Your car puts 100% power down in top gear, while ours is slipping the converter. I would always expect our advantage to diminish going down the track, a manual car of close power/weight ratio should pull up on the auto car on the back half. The real comparison would be to find out how other auto guys fare at the same ET/speed to see if there is anything abnormal about the top end. I tend to think this is typical of auto cars with loose converters to have a somewhat "lackluster" top end charge. Maybe we also have a top rpm issue. still wet sump, still stock lifters, still stock oiling system in the head....maybe the sustained 8000-9000rpm in the last 400ft or so is down on power?

Our converter might even be a little looser than ideal since we are able to spool it up on the line to about 4500rpm and it flashes over 6200rpm in first gear right away. The converter is actually so loose that the last time we had the car out Nov 5th, the converter flashed up higher than the shift rpm setting! It went [email protected] in powerglidemode: it shifted 1-2 and 2-3 during the 60' and simply rode the converter out to the 1/8mile. IMHO, we could go tighter on the converter and it would improve the mph up top, but it's a fine line and I'd hate to make a change that hurts the 60' and 330' times in order to pick up mph and end up a wash on ET.

Edit: oh yeah, this trans had like 140k miles on it from the car we pulled it from. It's possible that it was just 2/3 worn out and that contributed to the failure. hopefully a freshly built trans will last a little longer and hold up to additional power off the line. We are going to put in a huge trans fluid cooler as well, can't hurt.

It took all I had in me to not swear into the camera when the track guy was pacing back and forth. Worst part is he had made me stay behind him "due to safety rules" all of 15 seconds before, so I kinda think he was screwing with me on purpose.

I think next year we will have a better video setup. We have like 4 iPhones at the track each time we go since it seems most of our crew has one (plus wives have them too). Im going to see about finding some sort of go=pro=esque suction cup mounts for iPhone that are strong. Then we can have 3-4 in car vids per run, and they are light weight compared to my heavy duty roll bar mount and a DSLR w/ fisheye.

AWESOME GRAPH.

I hope the other guys all put some time and effort in this winter to catch up and we have a great 2012 season of the record changing hands over and over. There are like 4-5 cars all within a few tenths, this could be super fun and motivating if everyone stays interested. The record doesn't really mean much when none else is trying for it.

Re: #431: New GVR4 record holder - info & vids

Thank you for the compliments guys. Nate and I are very proud of how this car has developed seeing how it was put together only six months ago.

Its funny how much Nate and I are alike. At Englishtown after the record pass we could have packed it in and gone home with record in hand. However thats not how we are we didnt care so much about the record- we were more concerned about squeezing one more pass and as much performance out of the car as we could.

With this said:
Nate is already trying to figure out how to get the car to launch better weight loss- and a ton of performance improvements-. Im looking at rebuilding the transmission using better 3rd gear clutch pack to improve the up top performance time to stop using 125k+ mile used transmissions that likely are slipping. I am also contemplating building another engine for racing only . The engine that I built this year was for street use with off the shelf cheap and used parts.

Im sure at some point we will also spray the car since we already have all the nitrous stuff anyway- might as well give it a shot...

The car is not being built for the purpose of chasing a record this is not what Im about its a fun project...If the car goes faster awesome -if not 9s are nothing to be upset about... but 8s are better ...

Stay tuned ...

Drag racing is not so much my thing, but this is getting interesting. I can totally appreciate all the work that you guys are putting in here. I like these cars and from that standpoint there is some really neat stuff happening with the contenders.

Actually, it was identified instantly apron upload. If you didn't see it, originally there was a note under the video in the info area that listed Artist: Ozzy Label: XXX Ablum: XXX release date...ect.

Youtube actually looked up all the music attributes, maybe they use the Shazam iPhone app.

I'm sure you could claim that Ozzy, during one of his drug or alcohol benders, gave you verbal permission to use his material. He wont remember it, but you can challenge that he doesn't even know what year it is.
I'd suggest saying it was during the one between 1969-1983 or 1983-2010.
You can tell Ozzy was sober around 1983 because he got faaaaaat
