IMHO sell it and find something else. After owning DSMs for 9 years you have to keep up on them, with as many cars as you have I believe your gonna have troubles keeping up with it. They are very fun cars to own and drive but thats from an enthusiast standpoint. You will end up selling it in a year or less and it will be another notch in the headboard.

... Weird ...

... Like your wife/girlfriend looks when youre pushing all the right buttons ....

... never one to dissapoint a lady ...

We stayed in it...

He lifted...

... and we rolled off the throttle and entered the freeway at a buck and some ...

Choad firmly in trail, with a stunned look on his face...

I look over at Mary Ann, and she looks ...

... satisfied ...

After a second Mary Ann looks over and says in a really husky voice " damn, Johnny, you got a cigarrette?"

Yea, that was cool. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Stupid, but cool.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/applause.gif I had to check over my shoulder to make sure that my wife wasn't reading it too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I always get a kick out of John's stories.

Spend enough time around guys who get sh*t done without subscribing to forum drama and groupthink and you come to really appreciate their point of view. There's plenty of people out there telling stories about shiny, brand name, eleventy-billion horsepower, 8-second, trailer queens, so when I get a chance to hear someone whose goal was more than single second straight line masturbation and builds a near bulletproof car with cobbled together leftovers for shits and giggles, I listen. More often than not, they're the ones with the best stories.

Anyone here know Crazy Ray with the twincharged DSM? Would you believe that dude once swung open the back doors of a van doing 70mph to give a tailgater what for. When the 'gater wouldn't back off, Ray hoisted a "bazooka" to his shoulder and fired a potato through the asshole's windshield.

Real McCoy, anyone? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hsugh.gif

Why a VR4?
It's different. It's rare, even if only in LHD trim. It's got a real racing pedigree. It's a sleeper. It's old school.

Character pretty much sums it up.

In my case, I got the first one explicitly to turn into a rally car. I didn't want to race like a big *****, trying to save such a rare and special car (which I had already fallen in love with), so I got the second one just in case.

vr4 love is like a foot fetish, you just can't explain that sh*t to normal folk.

OP, your car list has no uglies on it (well maybe the foxbody IMO but it's a coupe at least) -- that's not a good sign

Yea I said vr4's are ugly, flame on footlickers.

Finding a clean m series is a challenge, that's for sure.

Ask VRausch, he just got one, and he'll probablly tell you the same thing.

Quite.

I am happy with what I found. I pretty much started from day one with gathering little parts and fluids to service the thing. It's an '02, and had just over 23k on the clock when I picked it up. Tons of maintenance records- mostly cosmetic stuff...

From a maintenance standpoint- It's a lot like the Galant (which I miss): All the little niggles will cost you if you don't sort them out. My approach- cut the maintenance intervals in 2 or 3... I love this car. It MOVES OUT when you want it to, and I'm seriously considering boosting it relatively soon. Wheels? Meh- It'll need more rubber with the added power, but until then the stockers are just fine. Parts, especially performance oriented ones, are indeed pricey for this thing, but there are ways of covering your *ss too. As an example: The VANOS system is a pricey bit to work on, the assembly is like 2k alone, and usually fails due to lack of oil caused by a $14 little filter and o-rings. That, along with the OEM fluid for the diff were the first two things done.

This car is addicting- VERY much like the Galant.

The galant is another similar animal, it's rather unique, not for everyone, and can be quite rewarding when you stay on top of the necessities. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Why should I get a vr4?

You see when you ask a question like that, it implies that you think you shouldn't. And that generally means one of two things. Either you want one badly but all your friends are telling you "No!" ... and so you need moral support ... OR ... you really aren't impressed by the idea at all, but someone is trying to convince you that you really should be.

I'm not saying asking the question is wrong. You certainly came to the right place if you wanted information on these cars, but on the other hand, the opinions you are going to get here will be pretty biased. We know these cars have issues but at the same time we have lived with those issues for so long that we have derived solutions to almost all of them. We are not just biased, we are in fact, unashamedly addicted!

Why is that? We don't really know. Like true love, it's about being able to see some quality somewhere that no-one else can. It's about reveling in all those idiosyncrasies rather than worrying about them. These cars are unique and our relationships with them just as much so. Some of us take great pleasure in throwing them around in the mud and the wet, whilst others would probably rather be castrated with a rusty penknife than drive them to the supermarket in the rain.

For what I've spent on my car, I could have bought an Evo X, maybe even an R34 Skyline, but there are a few rather unique privileges to owning a VR4 (at least there are over here).

Like when then the snotty nosed vehicle examiner puts your car up on the lift and tells 'you' he's going to 'fail' it for the 3" straight through catalytic converter deficient exhaust ... and then 'you' remind 'him' it's a 20 year old car and exempt from all emissions regulations. Like when the guy in the STI Impreza pulls on you by two car lengths and you casually remark that "to be honest, given that your car is older than his girlfriend and that his car cost more than $25,000, you were rather shocked it wasn't any quicker." Like when you realize that to build a very fast VR4 using stock Mitsubishi and DSM based parts costs about as much as his STI Impreza; but when he prices up what it costs him to do the same to his STI it comes to more than you paid for your house!!!

There's probably more but it just kind of all blurs into faded memories of burning rubber, hysterical laughter and the puzzled looks on the faces of the drivers in the rear view mirror ...

One of my best friends has an M3 and damn is it a fine machine. I think it's an 03; black on black on black, ragtop with the SMG and some on-it-when-he-bought-it 19s. Being a former DSMer, he was used to reading on forums and doing his own work. He starts reading a number of BMW forums and notices that nobody really does their own work. Those that do often want to be paid before they'll come over and turn wrenches with you in the garage on your car. It took some getting used to.

Recently, he's had to do the brakes on the M3. The locals on the forums provided several referrals for sterling repair facilities. He dug deeper, bought the parts himself, and he and a fellow DSMer did the work in his garage, saving hundreds. He's also had some flexplate on the driveline sneak up on him with some kind of tolerance being exceeded. Again, the Beemer forum guys are quick to steer him to quality repair facilities or provide an estimate to come over and "take a look at it," but once again, he ended up in his own garage with a fellow DSMer to swap out the part in a morning.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you pick up a GVR4, odds are good that you'll end up having a larger pool of people willing and capable of coming over to help you work on your M3 if you decide to part ways with the Mitsubishi down the road. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well my reasons are the whole ( wolf in sheeps clothing thing) I mean how many cars can you un assumadly sneak up on people and they never see thst kind of performance coming.
Then it's an extremely limited numbered car there WERE 3000 of them but I'm sure there are closer to 2000 left in the states if not less.
Then it's an all performing super car that can perform in any environment, what's not to love about these.
You can pay more for the other cars but those who know will always turn there head when they see you coming.

This week alone I've seen 7 twin turbo z32 and I've seen one vr4 since last year at a meet and evo8ya because his shop is ip the street from my house, but I couldn't tell you the last time I've seen on just rolling around.

Exclusivity that's where it become different when was he last time you saw a 240, or m3 on the street
