they were found on the early E38A RS Galant VR-4s, they were the older KM225/C50/C51 type transmission rather than the W5M33 that we all know. They were only ever intended to limp home with if you managed to damage the rear drivetrain during a stage. A few of them found their way to NZ as used imports, and many have reported issues with those gearboxes breaking when the selector bolt is removed. It's not the kind of push-button 2WD/4WD selection you would find on the cars designed to have selectable part-time 4WD systems - it's actually a bolt which holds a bracket which you need to remove on the underside of the transmission.

Quoting fuel:
seems stupid to me. The VR-4 was made 4WD to compete successfully in the rally! If you want something small light and RWD find an older Datsun/Toyota or Ford Escort.

Or if he wants to stay with a "Galant", just pick up a GA-GD Galant /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

i had the selectable trans on one of my VR4's, didn't really think it was all that. When i got it, i thought, "i wish it would switch between rwd and awd", but like a prev poster stated in it being fwd option for limping home, it makes sense now

The same switchable drive mode gearbox also came in the Vr4 RS versions, a friend imported a complete half cut from Malaysia down here, and it had the same switchable gearbox.

Not sure if you're still curious, Ross, but it looks like the recipe is in here. The only thing I see missing which may or may not be a concern is the all-steel tcase. If memory serves, there's already a guy down under who likes to mess around RWD in his E39A and he specified the all-steel tcase.

1. Weld the center diff (or install a spool, I've seen these available)
2. Disassemble the front axles, insert stubs into gearbox and hubs, discard actual axle
3? Route power through all-steel transfer box

You guys get to ditch the restrictor if you go 2WD? Production classes up here run a 32mm restrictor, open AWD runs 34mm, but 2WD goes wide open. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif

Hope all is well at your end, mate. Don't be a stranger.

Me and a buddy did this to his vr4 back in 2004. He's still driving it around like this. Performance wise it sucks but its fun to drive. We left his front axles in tact. Not the best option, but definitely the easiest.

Lol, there is that way too, though if it's a manual it's a adapter bellhousing, not plate unless its the rx7 tranny. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
