Question on oil pump change in car?

I'm so old that i'm newb again.

I couldn't find it in a search and VFAQ seems no longer active, but is there a procedure to change the oil pump in car?

My car has BS elmination. However, the nut to the oil pump sprocket either backed off or was stripped by the person who put together my motor, so the nut backed off, wedged into the bottom timing cover, and caused the timing belt to shred.... luckly at idle with clutch in when it balled up and stopped the motor.
Still about 3/8" wide timing belt, no skipped teeth, etc.

So, the threads on the oil pump sprocket shaft are shot, and the oil pump sprocket I'm sure is egged out. I don't know if anything else is effected, but I'm thinking instead of getting a new sprocket and nut and washer I should change out the entire lower engine cover / oil pump housing, yes?

Any links or suggestions to a procedure? I do not have a cherry picker or real interest in pulling the motor to do this. Was hoping I could get at it all with motor in car since I have no balance shafts.

Suggestions welcome. I've had everything external on the engine on and off, upgraded, replaced by me, but never did more than a '90 oil housing upgrade on the engine block itself.

Thank you ahead of time,
PJ Gross

Yes, you should replace the entire oil pump housing and you can pull it out without pulling the engine. You will need to remove the oil pan as one of the "legs" of the oil pickup is mounted to one of the main bolts.

It should be as straight foward as doing a timing belt job. Only difference is you're pulling the oil pump cover. If you can, find the 90 straight cut gears.
