so no one has any idea what trans is in my car?

Like someone said above, we need to know what the model number is that is stamped on top of the bell housing.

It should start with a w5m3 something.

It doesn't have a stamp. If it did I would already know what I have. I counted 5th gear teeth and it has the same 5th gear as a gvr4. no stamps that I could see. All I have to go by is the internal build structure.
It's a great transmission, super clean and shifts like new.
Does anyone know if the evoI-III transmissions use a reverse brake?

Ok, I looked there. Ah yea no help, least I don't think. Well there is a stamp there, however it doesn't say W5M33.

It says:

C51PH
FT1214

Just like that. Two lines. I'm even more clueless now. Anyone???????????

vr4 evo w5m33's have steel shift forks, as do evolution lancer type w5m33's.

You could theoretically have straight cut gears with synchro engagement, I think people get confused because most aftermarket straight cut gearsets use dog engagement instead (you can also get helical cut gears with dog engagement).

It can't be straight cut gears, It doesn't whine like a 4 year spoiled girl.

Reverse doesn't have a syncro. I called it the wrong name. It is a reverse brake. It does shift "heavy". Kinda like a truck tranny, but not. I guess you could call it clunky. It kinda falls into gear great with no grind.
I'm even more confused by the lack of identity numbers.

The reverse "brake" may not be a "synchro" but it looks exactly like one and serves the same basic purpose. It slows down any rotation to allow easy gear engagement.

yes yes you mentioned that. That's why I called it a synchro in the beginning.

Well behold some old galantvr4.org info from a few years ago Clicky

I feel like an idiot for not finding it on here earlier. oh well. Was a good thread though. now we all know what a reverse brake is! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hsugh.gif

What's the difference between the W5M31 and the W5M33?

So pretty much in conclusion we've learned that the reverse gear has a syncro and not a reverse brake.

And in conclusion what I've learned today is that I'm not going to live that one down anytime soon.
Oh well I'm laughing too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif

w5m31's appear to come from non-turbo 4wd mitsi's (libero, lancer, mirage, etc), they're 2.846:1 ratio. Have finer (weaker) gearteeth, a weaker centre diff, and a smaller viscous coupling than the turbo W5M33's.

Hope that helps.

Ok, well my trans in there now has the same viscous unit, and the same final gear ratio. They must have made way more options than I ever thought.
