Difference between VR-4 and VR-4 Monte Carlo Edition

Hello!
I'm happy :)D) owner of the Mitsubishi Eclipse GSR-4 91'

A couple of days ago I was searching the web for information about w5m332 gearboxes.
In the course of search I get the information about variations of 4g63t engines of Eclipse/Evo/Galant/RVR models...
Now I'm think that the engine in my d27a from Galant Vr-4 Monte Carlo.
Here is a pic of my car:

As you can see, engine is red head and has Mitsubishi logo on it(in article that I've read said that is exclusive sign of GVR-4 Monte-Carlo Edition engine) also intake is dual runner like Cyclone Intake.

So I want to do my car engine fully Monte-Carlo edition(now there is TD04 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif turbo and probably Eclipse ECU rather than Monte-Carlo)
I came here to ask the information about difference of Monte Carlo ed. from other versions.

P.S.I've tried to search the web and this site about it, but didn't find info /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Help me please /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The red valve covers can be found on all Galant VR-4s and all I know on the Monte Carlo edition is that it was "basically a Galant VR-4 RS with a few interior upgrades".

+1 to the" basically the same" comment. I personally thought it was just the badging that was different. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
Just a typical jspec gvr4, right?
Maybee garfield wright will chime in. He seems to be pretty knowledgable on that stuff.

Well no not really a "typical Jspec GVR4", our VR4s are the base model of the Galant VR-4 Series. The next one up is the RS, with the bigger fmic, 16g, Aluminum Hood with hood vents, yellow top injectors. Then came the Monte Carlo Edition, and in the middle of 91' debuted the Evolution which was pretty much a RS, can't find any specific details on the Evolution model other than when it debuted in 91' in the world of Rally.

I have an RS hood and it is definately not aluminium. Pretty sure that is an urban myth.
A Monte Carlo is basically an RS with creature comforts... Power windows, climate control, leather seats. And of course a Monte sticker on the door.
They also have 3.9 diff gears.
One of the members over here has one.

Like I said....a typical jspec( 16g,yellow top injectors, different decals/bumpers). If it matters, slap amonte vinyle on the side and call it a day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

+1 - all vented VR4 bonnets and frames are the same part numbers, which incidental **seems** like it weighs more than the regular one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
As far as I know, there are no trim/option codes related to Monte Carlo VR4s, where as the 'Super VR4' is '0M0' and '1M0' from memory.
They appear to be regular (talking JDM here) facelift (late 1990 models, when they shifted the E39A to 3.909 ratio - the E38A or RS changed in mid 1989) VR4s with leather seats. There are little stickers available (from MMC) to represent the numbers of the two works WRC cars and a 'monte carlo' sticker for the rear doors, just below the normal JDM stickers.

Thanks for the answers! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
But I still can't get,why GVR-4 ME has 240 hp unlike other modifications have 200/220...
Eclipse stock engine has 195 hp with td05 turbo, but GVR-4 ME has 240.

So I'm think what I need to change(besides that little td04) in my car to get 240 stock horse power))))
And how do you think,is there any sense to change my Eclipse ECU for GVR-4 ME?Or use Eclipse ECU and buy DSMlink?

It had a larger intercooler, larger injectors, and came with a small 16G turbo and I think running higher boost than us. There's your 240 hp.

The 1990-1992 Monte Carlo Edition had 210hp.
The 1990-1992 Monte Carlo "Spec" Edition had 240hp.

Check out this link for the different variations of vr4 in Japan. Let me know if you need some translation.

Basically, when it comes to Jspec VR-4s there are no less than 11 different variations.

But put simply, there is pre-facelift (1987 until October 1989), and there is facelift (October 1989 onwards). The pre-facelift VR-4s had 205hp while the facelift models had 220hp. Now of the facelift VR-4s, they were available in either Evolution or non Evolution, but I think the Evolution wasn't available until late 1990. The Evolution models had 240hp as they had a larger intercooler, 510cc injectors amongst other things such as a four bolt rear end, hood and extra bumper vents etc. The only way to truly spot an Evolution is the gear ratios. 3.909 = Evolution, 3.545 = non Evolution. Also the inlet manifold saying 'ECI MULTI Turbo Intercooler' as opposed to 'CYCLONE Turbo Intercooler' is another way to spot an Evolution.

The RS is a lightweight model, and in the E38A it was without 4WS. You could get a pre-facelift RS (205hp), facelift RS (220hp) or a Evolution RS (240hp). Please don't confuse all facelift RS models with the Evolution model, although a non-Evolution RS is not common at all.

The commemorate the VR-4s win in Monte Carlo the Monte Carlo model was relased in 1990 (facelift) and was available in either Evolution (for the manual models) or non-Evolution (for the automatic models).

Here's a run down copied from another forum differentiating all VR-4 models

The one above I have highlighted is the model I have, although it's not usually referred to as a GSR, and further down where it says the RS-E model is known as the Evo 0, the Evo 0 term is actually applied to all Evolution VR-4 models, not just the RS models.

sure, you might recognize it as the Dodge Challenger II or the Plymouth Sapporo on your shores.

Mine came from Japan (where most of NZ's used imports come from) in the late 80s and was owned by an older couple who could no longer get in and out of it easily. They had it since 30,000kms (19k miles) and sold it to me at 128,000kms (80k miles) about three years ago. For a car from 1980 it came with IRS, LSD, electric windows front and rear, electric fender mounted mirrors, working air con, four wheel vented disc brakes, even an alarm clock of all things! It's powered by a 2.0 4G63 SOHC ECI-Turbo engine, the same engine found in early jap-spec model Starions (Conquests).

Here's how I picked it up in '07

eterna10.jpg

Basically what I've done to it, is converted the factory struts to adjustable platform coilovers

DSCF0937.jpg

And fitted some SSR Mesh 16x7.5 +20 rims up front (with a 10mm spacer) and 16x8 0 offset rims at the rear with 205/50 R16 tyres all round

IMG_2609.jpg

DSCF1304.jpg

DSCF1308.jpg

So after I wasn't happy with the 2.0 SOHC, I was going to go DOHC with VR-4/Evo parts, however I went a little crazy and decided to fit a 6G72 V6 instead. The one I've used is a quad cam 24V MIVEC from a jap import model Diamante 30M from the mid 90s, and will be using some 3000GT parts along with other custom parts.

I haven't got far, I've more or less just mounted the block in the engine bay, I still have to sort out a strong box to go behind it yet. I am thinking Toyota R154.

And while I'm at it, here's my VR-4

you mean the factory fitted visors? I come across them every so often here on wrecked Galants, they are on just about every single Jap import 6th gen Galant in the country. If I found a few sets would any of you guys be interested? I think shipping over to the states would be about US$100 for 3-10 days.

I did a search +monte +carlo = click me for pictures of one.
