A/C Compressor Rebuild

After 4 years with no A/C I figure I may as well try to get it working while I have the head off the engine. I know there's a leak somewhere, and there appears to be some sort of goop on the compressor, I think towards the pulley wheel.

Is it possible to rebuild an A/C compressor at home, or would it need to be done professionally?
Also, I've seen people mention replacing all the o-rings in the system. Are these fairly obvious to find just be following the lines? About how many o-rings am I looking at?

And one last question for uber-bonus points: Does anyone know if I can use a North American compressor on a JDM car? CAPS shows different part numbers, but maybe it's a superficial difference?
