Welp, I sold the car today. It was bitter sweet; that car was certainly a learning experience, lol! It's was sold to a member of this forum though, and he's got big plans for the car, I'm excited to follow along. I lost a lot of money on "restoring" #860 to DD status, but at least it lives on...
  2. FS: #860/1000 SOLD

Fixed...So here was the damage "under the skin" This bracket is supposed to be at 90º (pointing straight down). And the side bumper support:So I gently pulled and straightened everything out - wasn't that bad at all:I took off the pass side bracket to use as a template and made them...
  3. FS: #860/1000 SOLD

Haven't had time to pull bumper off, but it looks like worst case scenario it'll need a new bumper cover, headlight trim and fender. That's what ins quoted me (along with paint and labor). I figure used parts in good shape can be bought for under $200, then shipping and paint if colors don't...
  4. FS: #860/1000 SOLD

Volvo's are cool man! I just don't have room for both, nor do I want to split funds between two "play cars," at least not until I'm making 6 figures and only working 3 days a weekThe 240 is spotless so it gets the garage, and I hate to see the Galant out in the driveway all the time.
  5. WTB: Cruise control

I've one also, taken off my car at 114k miles:I swapped it for a non-cruise cable for looks / de-clutter the engine bay while the motor was out. I had a tone of old / cracked vac lines, and I suspect this is why the cruise never worked for longer than a few seconds... PM me an offer if...
  6. FS: #860/1000 SOLD

Update - the car was involved in a small fender bender last Friday - I am getting insurance involved and will certainly keep this post updated and adjust the price accordingly after the dust settles. No serious damage, and I'm going to fight to keep a clean title (that car is too nice of a...
  7. FS: #860/1000 SOLD

Cause I know you're going to want to know what I'm replacing this with...My family has always been into Volvo's - I was raised in a 240 Turbo wagon. My little brother scored a 2 door 240 Group A car (one of 500 ever made) and I thought getting the Galant could be a fun car to compete with...
  8. FS: #860/1000 SOLD

*Quick update - due to the fender bender (see below) I'll knock $500 off the asking price - offer good until I fix itWell, it's with bitter sweet emotion that I'm posting the Galant for sale - but I've found another car I couldn't pass up.ALL THE DETAILS are here in a build thread...
  9. #860/1000 diary

Few more updates. I've decided to keep the welded center diff (mostly because I tore into the old tranny and didn't have big enough sockets to bust the two shaft nuts off), and I like how it drives / steers - it almost has a self centering effect to it. Hard to describe, but in the corners you...
  10. downshifting is smooth as silk, upshifting is notchy - normal?

I just tossed in a "new" transmission (Shep trans that had been sitting in a corner in some shop for years...) and brand new clutch - all new shifter cables with new bushings on the transmission side (only one cable is adjustable), and all new bushings in the shifter linkage and aluminum...
  11. #860/1000 diary

Yeah, it's been a... thorough learning experienceWhen I felt confident enough I drove it home one night. Next morning I went out to drive it to work but the idle was ALL OVER THE PLACE; from 2000rpm to barely running - and my throttle input had little effect. Just as I though "vacuum leak"...
  12. Mystery no start

Good news everyone... I figured mine out; here was my culprit:That little body ground that sits under the fuse box. I tried bump starting the starter this morning and it didn't turn over. So I took starter to autozone to be tested and it passed??? So I got back and pulled the starter...
  13. #860/1000 diary

Well I'm glad to report that motor fired right up the first try, and with no leaks! I shut it off after a minute and went home for the evening.Came back the next day and fired it up again to let it fully warm up and top off all fluids. After idling for a bit I started noticing a "grumbling"...
  14. Mystery no start

Still no luck I've got continuity to every ground I can find under the hood, and to starter. I've tried jumping it off my battery charger and nothing happens (car is alive, I turn key and everything dies - nothing comes back on until I disconnect and reconnect battery). And I unplugged that...
  15. Mystery no start

Yep - tested all grounds I could get to with volt meter, and had battery checked last night and it was good. Next step is starter I guess?? Although I've never heard of a bad starter killing power to the entire car for a number of minutes...
  16. #860/1000 diary

What I thought was going to take two weekends was approaching 2 months. My dad's place has a lift, so car was over there and I couldn't get to it often. Plus every time I looked at it I found something to replace - heater core hoses, gaskets, etc, so I had to wait for shipping as well...
  17. #860/1000 diary

Swapping fork from old tranny to new one I found this pivot ball shim, which I think explained more of my shifting woes... .So, before motor went back in I swapped out ABS unit for non-assist brake lines and prop valve.Taking this unit out was harder than putting the new lines in!Looks...
  18. #860/1000 diary

I need some catching up to do!What was going to be a tranny swap (paid $350 for it - Shep built trans that had been sitting in a corner of a buddies garage), balance shaft delete and timing belt ($500 maybe??) turned into a $2000 bill... the further I dug the more I had to replaceSome off...
  19. Mystery no start

Bumping this back up...I just tossed the motor and tranny back into by car (new trans + balance shaft delete and timing belt). Car cranked up fine while listening / looking for anything out of the ordinary on the lift, I even putted around the yard a few times. Once I felt confident in it's...
  20. #860/1000 diary

It's been slow goings... The deeper I go the more stuff I find I need to replace, lol.I chipped a big chunk of my balancer pulley lip off... It wouldn't budge by hand (didn't expect it to) so I shot it with some PB blaster and gave it a little tap with a mallet on the back side and it...
  21. #860/1000 diary

I'm starting to think the deep step depth was the problem - the throw out bearing wear ring is off center:
  22. #860/1000 diary

Man, time for some updates...I haven't fooled with Galant much the past few months due to the timing belt being unknown and shifting issues...Now that weather is a chilly mid 80's time to tackle some maintenanceLet's see, from right to left: Shep trans (stage 1 I believe) drive shaft...
  23. Bolt on GVR4 front mount intercoolers

Count me in for one of those 10 intercoolers please
  24. Bolt on GVR4 front mount intercoolers

LOOKS GREAT! Definitely interested in I/C by itself-For top firing turbo (stock now, upgrade to HTA68 or FP Green later on)Pipes I'd want would be for stock BOV and Evo Maf (but I'll probably do the pipes myself)
  25. Ohlins coilover kits now available for VR-4 and 1g AWD

How do these coil overs (or ones from Evo's adapted over) compare to KYB/H&R setup? My car came with adjustable KYB's and H&R springs, and it's a bit bouncy...

  30. Why are Galant VR4s undervalued?

I don't think these cars had the exposure or made big enough waves when new. I've been a car guy my whole life (in my early 30's), and my dad has been into muscle cars since the 60's - neither of us had heard or knew anything about these cars. In high school a had a few friends into DSM's, but...
  31. While the motor is pulled...

Yes, forgot to add the water pump.Good ideas on the mounts, bushings and harness - hopefully it just needs a re-loom...I might as well order new motor mounts and let the window weld start curing
  32. Removing Grille and clips

I'm still having no luck with these "aftermarket" clips. They look like the stock ones but someone obviously got the mold wrong. Got them from clipsandfasteners.com or somewhere. They'll clip into the core support, but then you can tug them right back out, they don't hold at all.Guess i...
  33. While the motor is pulled...

Car needs a new transmission and timing belt (current mileage: 115k), so I figure I'll just pull the motor and knock it all out at once. Advise I'm looking for is what other things (mods / maint) should I do while the motor is out. Here's a quick list of stuff I'm planning, let me know...
  34. Removing Grille and clips

Anyone having trouble installing them back in?I ordered new clips off the internet and they wouldn't seat in the grill, so I had to trim a tiny bit from each "anchor" on the clip - got each of them to snap into the grill perfectly, but now they won't snap into the core support??

Spring is in the air! And that means storm season in Texas - good opportunity to work on my wipers...Before:Nasty and beat - you can tell these have just say in the sun foreverI've spray painted wipers on other cars with limited success; they usually end up chipping and rusting again...
  36. Bolt on GVR4 front mount intercoolers

Add me to the interested list. I've got a bone stock car, but I'm in Texas... Willing to help out though if you need.

What shape is steering wheel in?
  38. FS: Dash Vents FS

Separate? I need the driver's side single vent...
  39. FS: stock (used) shifter cables

Assuming these were original they had 112k miles on them. I bought brand new ones along with shifter bushings and mounts to replace everything in one shot, but the cables worked fine. If yours are shot these will certainly get you by until you can afford brand new cables.I'm not sure what...
  40. #860/1000 diary

Thanks for advise! I had figured the only other thing effecting shifting other than a messed up clutch install (which probably would have broke by now) is a longer rod. i don't know if the bracket the rod threads into on the clutch pedal is factory or not, I was going to weld a female union /...

Tackled both my rear quarter panel windows "wind noise" issue the other day. Man, what a fun job that was. It wasn't hard at all, just took a long time to clean all the old tar off...Before:After:With new sealant applied right at the edgeNo gaps = no more noise! Now driving...
  42. Rear Quarter panel window wind noise

I just tackled this job, time to update this thread with pictures...This is a pretty easy job, toughest / longest part by far is cleaning the old "tar" off the window and car. I used some plastic spoons, WD40, and an entire roll of blue shop towels (and of course some alcohol to clean off...
  43. #860/1000 diary

This weekend I knocked out a few more things.Stainless steel brake lines all around (red ones for an additional 5hp of course). Stockers were very worn, but they all came apart very easily with no fussing! Brakes feel more sensitive / precise now <img...
  44. Spatchana (aka Pot)

Adding another good experience with Pot...Up front and honest seller. One part I had asked for did break during disassembly (darn 20-year-old plastic vents...) which was refunded to me immediately!Rest of the parts shipped quickly and we're all labeled, including the hardware!Wouldn't...

Just heard from TNZ, they said EVO 5th gears are no longer available... But they do still offer the taller 1st gear and shaft from the Evo.On a brighter note though, my alternator swap seemed to fix my battery drain, it sat two full days and still had 12.4V and started right up (I know I...
  46. FS: Minty stock leather front/rear seats

Would you separate parts? I'm could use top half of rear seat, (although looks like someone already called dibs on them...)
  47. #860/1000 diary

Tackled the alternator over the weekend (old one was charging at 12.8V)What a nightmare, lol. 2 hours in my brother and I had the car on the lift, the radiator out, the power steering moved out of the way and the subframe pulled, lol, and it still put up a fight!Oooh, oil everywhere...
  48. #860/1000 diary

Got on the lift today - i bled the clutch some more and did get a few bubbles on the 15th pump or so.Anyway, after it was bled, clutch fork had almost 0.5" of travel when the clutch was pressed (and I count still depress S/C by hand after bleeding):On the bright side though, I got my...

Here's a better shot of the fork:And what might be the starter plate??
  50. #860/1000 diary

My brother and were using a speed bleeder sucking fluid from the S/C bleeder - it's tough to get a wrench on that thing to do it the "traditional way" you're talking about. I'll toss it on a lift this sat, drop the support to free up room and try it again...In the mean time, here's the fork...
