you can swap water pipes without removing the thermostat housing, but I'd plan on replacing all those coolant lines while you're in there. Obviously, turbo has to come off. Good luck! It's not that bad of a job, just time consuming. I replaced all the turbo hardware, gaskets, nuts, o rings, all other misc. crap that you have to take off. Don't forget the o ring that goes into the water pump.
