Was just curiouse where does the turbo timer plug n play plug into, i know you can wire it up, but they have a harness to plug n play. just wanna know where it plugs into. i read that behind the ignition switch but im not sure.

So just disconnect the oem one and plug in the hks? correct?

There isn't a stock turbo timer if thats what you meant.

The turbo timer harness has a male and female plug in. It runs in series with the stock wiring, almost like a relay. So when you unplug the stock wiring where the ignition plugs into the main harness, the turbo timer plugs into both sides, now being what connects the two. You also need to run a wire to the ebrake. This way the car doesn't keep running and roll away.

Although turbo timers are a pointless mod IMO.

LIV4PSI is right, for the most part.

Why is it turbo timers are pointless? Never heard of oil coking?

That's why modern turbos are not just oil cooled, but water cooled as well. If you are playing on the streets, the car probably won't need cool down time, aside from the normal drive home. At the drag strip, the time it takes to get your slip and get back to the staging lanes is plenty. Same goes for Auto-x and Rally-x.

I have never been beating on my car, and then been in such a hurry I needed electronics to keeping it running for a minute or two. I sold the one from my GVR4 and bought dank beer with the money. At least that way, it wasn't a total waste. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Ha! I did the exact same thing with my Apexi turbo timer that was in 1051. Sold it and bought something more useful. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

sorry to jack...

but, is this really the consensus with regards to turbo timers? that they
are not necessary? i have always thought that it is a necessity for prolonged
turbo life.

i only ask because this has bothered me since i have always adviced friends of mine with turbo cars to put a TT. there is actually a bigger discussion in NASIOC that TT is not needed.

As long as you don't go out, do a bunch of WOT pulls, and then shut down the car immediately, it should be fine. Driving the car all over town, or coming off the freeway and driving through town to your destination is enough to cool the turbo down just fine.

I have enough wiring in my car as it is for gauges, wideband, meth kit, etc. I removed the turbo timer in my car to cut down on the excess wire clutter. Removal of Maftpro in 1051, and SAFC in 503 when I went to ECMlink in both cars also helped remove a bunch of wire clutter as well.

I wished they made a better oil cool down method, such as circulating the oil after you shut off the engine for 'x' amount of time...Otherwise to me, those turbo timers are pointless as I still have to sit in the car (not going to leave it in neutral like an idiot) and wait...But, I already have one in the car (came with it), so I do use it; just not something I would waste $$ on.

Suppose they would make more sense in an automatic, so you could put it in park, set the brake and lock the car and just let it shut itself off.

As for letting it cool down a little, I always do but the time varies...if I just got off the freeway for an extended period of time (esp. with hard runs) I'd let it idle for a bit; whereas if just went to the store I'd let it idle for only a few seconds.

My turbo looked pretty much new when I took it apart, so between using high quality synthetics and frequent changes and letting it idle down for a bit (or more) I believe those helped keep it that way...if you ever see what excessive heat does to oil that sits (coking) and how small the passages are, you'd probably want to do the same.

It is definitely the opinion of Nasioc that they not needed on Subaru's. The coolant keeps "burping" after the car is shutoff, so it is circulating and keeps cooling the turbo.

It seems necessary for the 1g 4g63 cars... It's written on the car, just flip down your sun visor and read those lines... It actually says let the car idle for 60 secs or more after spirited driving
