hi there.I have a 1988 E39A VR4 sedan as my daily driver. At 235 thousand kms the engine is getting a bit tired and am going to replace it. I have 3 spare good ones to choose from and would like to use one as close as possible to the build date of the car. I would like to know if it is possible to identify engines and transmitions and the original vehicles they came from by their engine/serial numbers. I remember Mitsubishi Motors had a website with a library of information on all of their vehicles many years ago but i have not been able to locate it. Any help would be very much appreciated.

It's directly possible for US market cars, because the VIN was stamped into the block. I doubt if this was the case for Japan home market or export cars as it was not a requirement.

That said, the engine number itself is stamped in the block, and those were done sequentially, at least in a particular engine series such as the 4G63. If you can provide what those are, we can possibly at least speculate on build chronology.
