i just had this happen to me. i jammed it back in there and smacked the edge with a screwdriver and hammer to keep the sleeve in place, but still having movement and its been good for a few hundred miles.

I wouldn't install that back in the galant. I have an extra set of shifter cables if you want. PM if interested.

You can get it to work well enough to get you by for a bit. As was mentioned, shove it back together and dog the edges of the retaining piece with a screwdriver. You're going to probably have to replace it before too long, though.
