What exactly is the black tar that seals the tails?

I am cleaning all the sealant off the car from the 1/4 rear window and the tails for the repaint.

What is that stuff and where can I get more of it so I can reassemble everything back togtether?

Thanks.

I have no idea why I cant think of what its called, but if you go to any autobody supply they should have it on hand. I dont use it often, but we have boxes of it at work.

We used to call it dum-dum. Check at your local NAPA, they should have it.

NOT CAULK. I would never be able to get the tails back out.

Besides, white, black, brown, red, yellow. Whatever gets the job done. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Terry go to you closest nissan dealership and ask the parts guy at the counter if he has any for the taillights.

Sealer B-1669
B6553-89915

It showed up as not available and no price but they always pack it in with new taillights and the parts guys always have it on hand. I got it to seal my fan shroud to the vw radiator I put in the car.

Your welcome

FWIW when I re-sealed my taillamp lenses, I just used clear RTV. Leak free for ~8 years.

Is it the same stuff that is used on windshields? Black Urethane, iirc.

No black urethane doesn't come off. This stuff stays gooey forever. It comes in a roll wrapped around wax paper. One kit is more than enough to do our lights.

It's called butyl (byoo-tul). Not like urethane, it doesn't harden.

OK, I know what you're talking about then; just can't think of the name. It's like a putty that doesn't dry...I'm sure a good hardware store (not crap depot) would carry something like that, esp. in the plumbing section (like the wax ring for the toilet sort of)

What Icee said (rubber /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif) I think it's also referred to as seam sealer....Maybe?

^^Nope. Seam sealer sets. Its similar to silicone caulk, but its paintable.

And if you REALLY cant find it, I suppose I could stick some in an envelope and send it to you...Im not sure how much it would take.

I need enough to do the rear tails and the 1/4 rear windows.

I will see if I can find it at autozone or Napa.

Really, just call some body shop supply places and ask for "rope butyl".
