This is why you torque your end nuts

This is probably the third of fourth transmission I've come across where the end nuts on the input and intermediate shaft were not torqued & staked. Its a shame because this condition is completely avoidable. This is the worst I've seen thus far and wanted to share:

That will weld right up! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/applause.gif I see it sometimes as well. As much as I like people DIY'ing, some people aren't cut out for some things. It's not a mindless task like a brake job or suspension install.

Did the nuts actually come loose, or did the shaft build enough play to do that? I have a trans on my floor that ate into the sandwich plate from excessive play in the whole shaft.

I've seen that on transmissions that have never been opened... It was common enough that there's a vfaq on it...

From what I've seen and read, it's from clearances opening up after lots of driving/abuse. The nuts don't actually come loose, just the shafts get loose. Then they need to be retorqued, but to me it's an indication that a rebuild is getting close.
