504/2000 Restoration project and 2 other VR4. Why do I love these cars!!

Hello Guys,

This is my second galant vr4 build. This first one I built was a complete build for performance. This one will be built to keep mostly stock forum. Just a few upgrades for handling and looks. My plain is to replace alot of worn parts and clean it up to show room condition. I am going to be doing it in stages. My first stage is the rear suspension and undercarriage. I have already ordered alot of stock suspension parts from Mitsubishi. WL front and rear swaysbars. Here is some pics of what I have done so far.

Rear suspension. Lot of cleaning to do!!!

Stock exhaust is shot. So I will be replacing that.

I will be sanding/wire brushing and painting all the rear suspension and undercarriage. This is going to take some time.
I am also going to rebuild the drive shaft. Get it painted with all new parts. I found some ball bearings on the floor.
I am sure it came from the drive shaft.

Wish me luck!!! Having alot of fun so far

Check the link for video I made.

More work today. I removed the driveshaft. Going to get it rebuild. Ordered the new parts from the dealer. I also started cleaning the fender area for rubberized under paint. I am thinking about dropping the gas tank to clean it.

Also I keep finding ball bearings on the floor. Any idea where they came from?

Next thing in order should be to arrange the emblems on the rear to the correct position. Every time I see that it just looks like it was rear ended and a body shop just threw them on.

The drive shaft in finished got to go pick up. Got is sand plasted and painted also with all new parts. Also Mitsubishi guy dropped of new parts .

Bob you've not been around but I did the design work and John aka Boostx did the leg work and in the end we came up with new bushings for the subframe as well as the mustache brace. PM John and see if he has any or yell at Garfield and see if he has any in stock. John may still be away but see if one of the two can get you a set before everything goes in.

Wish mine was in that condition right now. Still have to roll it out and do all that to mine plus cut out the trunk for the fuel safe.

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

Nice job so far this build is inspiring wish I had the skills/space(condo no working on cars allowed)to duplicate such a build. With that being said there have been several guys on here who have done in my opinion top notch resto/mods on these cars. I say we should do them all collectively as a group. I am sure there is at least one guy in each region who has done such a build/restoration as you have. I would certainly at least like to address the rust issues before it gets worse so I nominate my car for the next rust/resto mod if anyone in the tristate area is willing to tackle such a project. Of course I would fund the project both for parts and labor.

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

Ok since my swaybars are going to be a while. I have started on the front. Took of the front bumper, intercooler, headlights, grill and radiator.

Ordering new radiator and fan shroud. Taking a few more parts to sand plaster (intake box and front bumber suport). The front doesn't look as bad as the rear, but
there is some small rust spots here and there I will have to take care off. The former owner had the car repainted couple years ago and the body shop didn't do the
great job. Lots of overspray. I will be removing all of that. Couple bolts broke when taking of the bumper. I will have to drill them out and retap the thread. Did that
a couple times while working on the rear of the car. The valve cover has a small leak so I ordered new gasket. I want to get the 93 headlights. I really liked
these on my old VR4. Made the car look newer. I will also ad a HID kit. Check out the pictures!!

I found some fenders today. They are off a 91 galant non VR4. Just going to drill the holes to fit the side molding. I ordered a new exhaust manifold today.
My stock one is cracked. I also ordered new stainless steel hardware also. My next step is to sand down the rust area below the battary try. Treat the area

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

Whats the plan with the rust behind the fenders? That seems like one of the more common areas on all galant models. The fender and fender liners seem to just trap anything and everything back behind there. I've pulled out more than a fist full of dirt and rust from behind my cars fenders.

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

I cleaned, sanded and treated mine with zero rust, and then painted over them, and the inside of the fenders. I think I may have used rustproofing in a can on the fenders on the second car.

I unbolt everything about once a year and clean these out. Leaves get caught in there and trap too much moisture.

Also the sways are on there way. So I can put the rear suspension back up.

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

You should really be cleaning more before you weld. Weld on rust, you get rust in the weld and no matter how much rust bullet you put on there, it will still be there. This means it will rust out sooner in that same spot. How soon is another question, but it will happen.

Good on you for getting your hands dirty though

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

I have used a product called rust mort. Auto paint store's can get order it or it may be available online these days. This can be thinned with water & sprayed into cavities to stop rust & leave a protective coating that will stop it from rusting further. I have used it with great success when replacing panels & wanting to protect the backsides of welds I didn't have good access to. My method was to thin according to directions then use a garden sprayer on wide mist to get back into tight spots & blind cavities. Use it to excess & the metal will not rot from the inside out.

I hear ya, welding in awkward places is a real pain. However, even just the slightest bit of contaminant getting into your weld will cause more metal to oxidize, so you need to have everything absolutely clean before you start.

For my senior project, my group designed and built a log splitter. For a stronger blade on the wedge, I built up weld beads and then ground it down. Before I started, I didn't get the two pieces of steel making up the V clean enough and it made the biggest headache of all time. The first bead I ran got contaminated, then I was chasing it around layer after layer. Often times it got so bad I had to grind it all off and hopefully find a clean layer to start on again.

Welding is like painting in that, in order to get a good finished product you need to prep well.

Regardless, I have a lot of respect for you for doing it yourself. I'm sure having good solid metal there is a huge improvement over what it was.

Thanks Whoodoo. I will keep my eye on that area. Check it from time to time. This is my first time dealing with rust. I won't buy a car again with out seeing it in person. Lesson learned. But I am enjoying working on the car. But I don't think it is that bad compared to other cars I have seen.

^I guess I'm confused as to the suspension and brakes mods then. I understand the beauty of keeping a car 100% stock but having very capable suspension and brakes and then blasting out of a corner with 170 awhp and a heatsoaked stock ic isn't that fun.

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

Bob,

I hear what you are saying regards having a comfortable cruiser over a performance car, but I don't see why a 3G/EVO8 MAF wouldn't fit into that equation. It flows more air admittedly but apart from having the potential to add performance everyone reports that the 3G/EVO8 MAF also provides a much smoother and far more linear power delivery and is essentially more refined after years of development. I still think it would fit right in with what you are trying to do.

Now that I have my big build going on I am also trying to keep my other car fairly stock, but if I stay with a MAF it will definitely be a 3G/EVO8 one.

Paul.

maybe down the road I might change things up but for now I want to keep it looking stock under the hood. I did get it off the jack stands yesterday Got more parts in from Mitsubishi today. Both front fender liners and some little parts. Got to install turbo manifold, Radiator and fan, intake, fenders and front bumper. Then the car will sit for alittle bit. Need to save up more money to finish the front suspension. Haven't even started that yet.

That's cool and I do understand where you are coming from. If however you did decide to go that route, Keydiver did a write up in the How To section about installing a 3G MAF in the stock airbox. That sounds to be exactly what you would want if you did this!

We are taking a break from working on the car today. Thought I would update the thread while I cool down. I think I lost 10lbs today. So hot in Florida.

Bumber and fenders back on. Installed the front suspension and brakes.

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

I'd like to know what all was involved in getting the wheels to fit properly, and with proper alignment. The car looks pretty low.

What was used for rear camber? The rear tires fill out the fenders pretty well. Anything special back there? I know there's a set of BC coilovers under it. Was it just the camber plates up front and then the typical toe adjustments up there, or was anything else required?

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

Everything is stock for camber in the rear. I needed alittle negative camber to fit the wheels. Fronts are just the BC camber plates and toe adjustment. The final spec's for the rear wheels is 17 8.0 15 offset (Kics 10mm spacers). Front is 17 8.0 25 offset.

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

Was the 10mm spacer put in to clear suspension, or to push the wheels out a little further? Did you have to put longer lug studs in for that?

Since you had to have some negative camber, i'm assuming they were used in order to clear the rear suspension, right?

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

I used the spacer kit to space the wheels out further. The wheels cleared the suspension with out the spacer also. The Kics spacer is a bolt on spacer kit. You don't have to install the longer studs with these.

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

I finally took the time to read this thread from beginning to end. Simply amazing. I love it! Great work!

That also led me to a question - a little late in the thread, but...

What did you use to paint the battery tray area after removing the rust? I have that same patch of rust on 777 and I'm at a point where it would be a good idea to stop and fix it. I've done it before on a previous gvr4, but I had stripped the bay bare and resprayed everything (not doing that again any time soon). It looks like you just did that section, which is what I plan on doing. So I wonder, what was used and how well did it blend with the old paint? I'm looking at just trying a single stage paint in an aerosol can. Any tips or info regarding what you did would be much appreciated.

I sanded it down. Then painted on the rust protection. Then painted with high temp white engine enamel. Worked out well.

Car looks great, but i gotta say, i think that while the steering wheel looks nice by itself, it looks way out of place in a VR4. It might look good in something like an Evo or 350z, but to me, it clashes with the early 90's styling of the vr4 interior in a BIG way.

Not much a fan of the new wheels either. I liked the others a LOT more.

Charles - Thanks for sharing! Looks great! I was hoping your car would pop up for sale when I was shopping for one, its the best stock-ish builds on the board.

Now, are these lowdown rails? Did you compare the height of the seat rails compared to the stock rails? I hate how high I sit in the gvr4. Swapping seat rails will help a lot, as will the seat itself, I suppose.

Is the driver's seat centered behind the steering wheel nicely? I ask because the Sparco Evo in my car is, but if I had to put the wider Evo2 on the driver's side, I would have to offset it a bit to the left to clear the center console.

Re: 504/2000 Restoration project. Lots of pics

Brake project got put on hold. As my wheels don't clear the new brake caliper. Looks like I will need to order new wheels. So been looking for them.

Installing the new clutch slave cylinder and new lines. Looks like the pervious owner had replaced the slave cylinder twice, but used aftermarket. Which he had to modify the metal clutch line to fit. So I am making a new line. Couple pictures of that.

Out with old.

Old line next to new line.

New rubber line vs old line.

New fitted.

Also got a bracket to get powder coated. As it was rusty.

So just waiting on the bracket to come back. Then can finish the job.

Thanks. More to come.

I feel your pain, Charles. The 3KGT calipers stick out a TON. I went through the same wheel dilemma when I installed mine. Spacers, get new wheels, get a different brake setup...FML.

I'd start tackling the problem by figuring out how far you are off. Would a 5mm or 10mm spacer get you to where you need to be? If you're dead set on getting new wheels, keep in mind, spoke design will play more of a part than offset will. Just to give you an idea; The BBS LMs I had were +39, and the Work wheels I currently have are +30. I needed a 10mm spacer up front in both cases. With the wheels I currently have, the 10mm spacer up front probably only gives me 2-3mm of clearance between the spoke and caliper. The TE37 spoke design looks pretty good form a clearance standpoint. I know the RPF1s provide good clearance, and the Evo 8 Enkeis clear the 3KGT brakes straight up. Hopefully that helps you when shopping.

Before you buy new wheels, I'd just see how far you are off. Take a set of washers, and stack them up on all 4 studs until your wheel clears the caliper. Then, take a mic and measure the washer stack. That's an easy way to see what thickness of spacer you'll need. I found the washers that come off the head bolts work great, but any washer will work. You'll just need a shit ton of them. You can even snug up the lugs and set the car on the ground, to give you an idea of what kind of fender poke you'll have. In your case, I think that's going to be the dealbreaker. Judging by how your car currently sits on the TE37s, 10mm will have you poking out too much.

I did check need a 10mm spacer to clear. Can't do that though with the TE37's I have. Sticks out to far. Don't like that look. I have found the wheels I want. Just got to special order them. TE37V will be up for sale soon. Sad because it is my all time favourite wheel, but these new ones are sick too. So over all I will be happy.

Glad you were able to catch the oil leak before it did serious damage. Maybe consider a JNZ premium remote oil pressure sender kit? I ended up getting one for insurance and highly recommend it. You can even get a rubber cushioned clamp mount to help dampen vibrations. The accuracy of the readings will probably improve and the longevity of the sensor will increase.

Observing your eye for detail over the past few years I thought the sticker was odd but makes complete sense. The first thing that came to mind actually was where/how much it would cost for those Volks.

Car doesn't really need much else. It did have an idle issue when I got it. Found the ISC motor bad and ECU needed to be rebuilt. Few pictures of the parts I got so far.

G they are 0Z Racing Reps. Cant get the rear deal in 4 lug.

Update on shifter assembly rebuild. Made a massive improvement. No play at all. Replaced the pcs on the transmission too. Although the stock ones looked ok. Easy job though.

Base bushings wore out.

Got some new Nardi parts in. Steering wheel, VR6Eater shift boot and Shift knob. The shift knob sit to high with the stock shifter arm. I have a 1G unit coming. Should sit a lot lower.

Took the VR4 to another show. Japfest in UK. Had a great time.

Ok installed the 1G shifter today. Great improvement. No stretching of the shift boot. Great mod.

Did these same replacements on my F5M33 transmission mated in the Colt, and it does make a huge difference in taking up all those little bits of play. They really do add up across the whole system.
However, a Mitsu trans only really shifts well once the shafts and fluid are all properly warmed up. Nice to see the attention to detail there!

Went through every page of the thread, and i'm blown away by the restoration your car went thru!

Where did you outsource the oem parts thru the years?

I'm currently building one also, and looking for parts to make mine stand out above the rest

Cheers from the PH!

Thanks for the kind words. Parts are all through Mitsubishi dealers in US/UK/Japan. Look forward to seeing your VR4.
