936/1000 progress report

Hello everyone. haven't had the time to write one of these up until now. I have owned 936 for about 2 years now. When I bought here she was basically bone stock with a rebuilt bottom end from DSMGraveyard. she has some rust issues that I plan on fixing this spring, (no room in the garage thanks to my brothers TA).
Driveway Queen lol.
Anyway here is how she currently sits.
I would like to see close to 500 horse. I will be switching over to a borg warner s300 turbo soon.
if you see any weak links or have any advice let me know. thanks for looking

I like the placement of your radiator. Seems thick and like it fit well right behind the intercooler

Anybody know if the drivers seat back and the passenger seat back are interchangeable? the only difference I see is the lumbar adjustment.

100% sure you don't have evo 9 rods on a stock 6 bolt crank.

Engine bay looks great though! I wanted to install my intercooler in the same spot You made it work much better though.

ok. you caught me. the po said it was a dsm graveyard with 9 rods and pistons. just checked their website and its only the pistons. my bad.
thanks the install turned out to be rather simple just attached the upper bracket to the bumper mounts and welded some tabs to the radiator support.

The seat backs are shaped differently (Larger bolster on the outside of them), also the gear/teeth for the recliner would be on the wrong side.

Re: 936/1000 progress report

ok. I believe I have my winter plans laid out.
1. fix the dsmgraveyard bottom end with new rods. I see a lot of people using pauter x beams or manley turbo tuff rods. also considering carillo I beams. any imput one rods would be a big help.
2. kiggly main girdle.
3. borg warner s300 turbo (still working out what specs I need to fit my needs).
4. top-mount exhaust manifold
5. acr2 spark amp
6. finish shaving the bay and minimizing wires

I am looking for 5-600hp plus. any and all input appreciated

Re: 936/1000 progress report

So i just pulled the pistons and rods. Was planning on just doing rods buuuuut the pistons are pitted as f#ck. So lets replace them to. I am fairly new to the bottom end of the motor. So stock comp ratio is 8.3:1 correct? Im planning on running quite a few booostes, would there be much benifit of switching to an 8.5 or 9.0?

Somehow the cylinders are still mint

Re: 936/1000 progress report

Raising the compression will always get you more power. How much pressure are you planning on running? Even on 9.0 to 1 you will have no problem running 35 psi on E85.

Re: 936/1000 progress report

35 is right around what im looking for. I will be running a borgwarner s300sx 8375, which is capable of 45psi. And if i can reach that i will. Whats the rule of thumb? Higher boost lower c.r?

Re: 936/1000 progress report

I like 8.5:1. That is already a touch higher than stock which is 7.8:1. I like the extra margin of error that lower compression gives you. You could throw a bunch of boost and timing to it and still be relatively safe. I would mic your bores for taper and concentricity bro especially with the condition of those slugs. At the bare minimum, a cylinder hone will be required when you fit new slugs in there.

Re: 936/1000 progress report

I was planning on running a hone through it for sure. How would i check the others? Slap the caliper in there at a few different points? Its a little concerning those only have 30k on them

Re: 936/1000 progress report

The best way would be a dial bore gage. Most people are not going to have that equipment. The other way would be with telescope gages and a micrometer. Calipers are not accurate enough.

On another note. You can go 9:1 pistons with that turbo and the boost that you want to run. You just need to make sure you have good enough rods to handle that. Those 1120 low z injectors will not be able to handle that. Even if you went to stock compression pistons you will probably run out of fuel. Same with the fuel pump. Your going to need to go to a wally 400 and run -8 feed lines.

Re: 936/1000 progress report

I have manley turbo tuffs coming. I think im going to go with the 8:5 comp ratio just to be safe. Atleast until my tuning skillz are up to par. I know i am going to run out of fuel at some point. That stuff is a 30 min job to swap out.(inline pump). I'll cross that bridge when the time comes. Dont suppose map has a dial guage they "rent" out?

Ok. So i finally got my pistons and rods. Manley turbo tuff I beams and manley pro series dished 8.5:1. On gapping the rings (top and 2nd) they say for high boost application on the gap go bore size times .008 and with the oil rings a min of .015. Anybody have any personal experience with this? Should i just go with it?

What size are your photos? There is a 2mb size limit I believe. I have run into it a few times.

those tires are super wide. If you get them to fit in te fenders you may end up with the turning circle of a Dually if they will even fit.

That makes sense. I checked and my photos are 3.6mb, I'll have to change a camera setting or two.
I'm just playing around with the tires right now. It would be nice to use them all around but maybe just rears and go slightly smaller up front.

Re: 936/1000 progress report

You will have to be real careful with the tire sizes if you do that, you will destroy the drive-train if the sizes are off. Need to keep the same rotating diameter at all 4 corners

Re: 936/1000 progress report

03/07/17 12:41 PM
Re: 936/1000 progress report

You can stagger them, but in order to run a wider tire, you have to run a lower aspect ratio. You also have to look into how the tires sit (or compress) as the lower AR will normally have a stiffer side-wall and not compress as much, so you may also have to run different tire pressures t equal out and save the drivetrain.

GSTwithPSI

03/07/17 07:40 PM
Re: 936/1000 progress report

All of the tires need to have the same rolling diameter. It will require math to ensure that condition is met.

Re: 936/1000 progress report

Ah, I see what your getting at now. Well it's good for thought. I will have to see what kind of clearances I can get and go from there. Probably would be easiest to go with a narrower tire. I just have these floating around the garage, it would be nice to use them.
